The referee counts incorrectly and costs Stan Wawrinka the victory

At the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, the Italian Flavio Cobolli beat the Swiss Wawrinka 6:7, 7:6, 6:3 – probably with a little help from the referee. When the score was 1-0 for the Italian tennis professional in the third set, a serious mishap happened: Wawrinka scored first on his serve. Carlos Bernardes also announced the interim result of 15:0 correctly – but probably entered it incorrectly into the scoreboard.

The next point in the match went to Cobolli, which resulted in a score of 15:15. But the scoreboard in the stadium suddenly showed 0:30 from the Swiss’s point of view. Even more curious: Wawrinka didn’t notice the referee’s mistake – and apparently nobody else in the stands either.

Kyrgios criticizes

A short time later it was 30:40 from Wawrinka’s perspective and his Italian challenger took the point for the decisive break in the third set. It should actually have been 40:30 for the Swiss. The tennis world is puzzled by this faux pas by the referee. Nick Kyrgios went even further on X and attacked the referee: “Bernardes should have been fired years ago. How can this happen? Potato.”
