ARD broadcaster wants to cancel cult show – Bommes also moderated it

Experience sports stars and legends up close, documentaries full of history and reports with great insights – the “Sports Club” has been attracting NDR viewers to its new screens for over 50 years. But there is now bad news for all sports lovers. According to information from “Bild”, the ARD broadcaster should stop the show!

This would be the end of an era! Finally, many well-known faces moderated the show.

ARD broadcaster: Bitter news

In 1974, today’s “Sports Club” was introduced to the TV program under the name “Sport III”. However, the show, which won many loyal viewers for over five decades, will be history at the end of the Bundesliga season in May 2025. As “Bild” knows, the program with reports and interviews, which runs on Sundays at 10:50 p.m. on NDR, no longer meets the zeitgeist and the taste of the audience. Most recently, only around 116,000 viewers in the broadcast area tuned in – not enough.

What the future of NDR sports will look like is currently being discussed internally. The ARD channels are all saved, amplified for online formats and cheaper to produce.

ARD channel: Prominent faces

A number of prominent presenters shaped the face of the “sports club”: Fritz Klein was the first presenter, followed by well-known personalities such as Reinhold Beckmann and Gerhard Delling as well as current faces such as Martin Roschitz and Sina Braun. TV star Alexander Bommes, who has hosted the successful quiz show “Gefragt – Gejagt” on behalf of NDR for years, also shaped the show in the past.

With the “Sportclub” he set the first major milestone in his career, just a short time after he completed his traineeship and was already moderating the “Hamburg Journal”.

In times of tight budgets, other ARD regional programs are also under pressure: Formats such as “RBB Sportplatz”, WDR’s “Sport im Westen”, or SWR’s regional editions have already been abolished or adapted.
