Electric “little friend” – Renault is launching the new R5 at this price – Economy

Cologne (dpa/tmn) – The original became a big star as the “little friend”. Around 30 years after the end of the legendary first edition, Renault wants to repeat history again and is bringing back the R5 as an electric car. Just like back then, they want to make mobility affordable again, but the fun shouldn’t be left behind, said Renault.

The French don’t just want to rely on bold colors and fresh shapes, but also on a quick drive and a refreshing set-up. When the new one goes on sale at the turn of the year, prices will start at 27,900 euros, but will later drop below 25,000 euros with a basic model.

The 3.92 meter short new edition with four doors and 326 liter trunk cites the original, which was first built in 1972, with its proportions and many details. Inside, however, Renault relies on digital technology and under the sheet metal on a newly developed electric drive.

This uses a front motor with either 70 kW/95 HP, 90 kW/120 HP or 110 kW/150 HP and is powered by a battery in the car floor with either 40 or 52 kWh. According to Renault, this is enough for up to 410 kilometers before you have to add 11 kW to the alternating current and, at best, 100 kW to the fast charger.

Other cult models are also on the verge of a comeback

With the R5, Renault is involved in the new segment of affordable electric cars, in which Citroën offers the ë-C3 and VW plans to soon come with the ID.2. However, the French are already thinking ahead and will be bringing a new interpretation of the R4 in 2025 with the same technology but an SUV design, before the price hurdle of 20,000 euros is to be cleared in 2026 with a rediscovered Twingo.
