It’s over early in Shanghai for co-favorite Alexander Zverev. This will not lead to an attractive quarter-final.

Update from October 10th, 6:55 a.m.: With the somewhat surprising round of 16 exit in Shanghai, Alexander Zverev (27) missed the chance for a possible exciting revenge against US Open finalist Taylor Fritz. The 2021 Olympic tennis champion, who was in poor health, lost 4:6, 5:7 at the Masters 1000 tournament against the well-disposed former top ten player David Goffin from Belgium.

In the meantime, Zverev sought advice from his coach and father Alexander Zverev senior in the stands. Out of frustration, he hit a ball against the boards at the end of the second set. But there was no turning point.

Zverev with a chance to equalize the set

In the meantime, in the second set it once again looked as if the favored German could successfully fight back against defeat. With difficulty, the number two seed defended itself against the threatening 3:5 after a break deficit and equalized to 4:4. But Zverev then missed a set point at 5:4 and then suffered the decisive loss of serve.

Zverev competed in Shanghai despite his pneumonia, having previously skipped the tournament in Beijing. Regardless of the ongoing health problems, the top German player mastered his first two tasks.

Zverev is foaming with anger: thugs on the ground

Zverev got entangled in discussions with the Swedish referee Mohamed Lahyani several times in his third round match. At 4:5 in the first set, Zverev was warned for exceeding the time limit. A game later, the Hamburg player had a heated disagreement with the referee when he loudly complained about a decision. However, Lahyani was correct that the ball bounced twice.

Zverev threw his racket on the ground and received a warning. Even at the break (5:6), the German number one was still angry and sent clear words to the referee. “I haven’t had any luck with referee decisions all year,” said Zverev, but admitted: “Everyone makes mistakes, that’s human.”

Zverev moves into the round of 16: drama in the final tiebreak

Despite the excitement, Zverev saved himself in the tiebreak and used his second set point. He continued his discussion during the break in the sentence. After the long and hard-fought first set, the favorite was quickly 0:5 behind in the second half after three service losses and conceded the equalizer against the world number 40.

In the decisive round, Zverev served strongly, but at the same time missed eight break chances – four of them as match points when the score was 6:5 – which is why he had to go into the tiebreak. There he pulled away and was in the lead 6:2. But Griekspoor made things exciting again with three points in a row before hitting a volley just into the net. (dpa/kk)
