According to the verdict: Amazon stops selling the Fire TV Stick – it is still available here

BARGAIN

Following a ruling by the Munich Regional Court, Amazon has to stop selling various Fire TV Stick models. However, the banned models are still available from these retailers.

Anyone looking for the Fire TV Stick on Amazon may be rubbing their eyes in amazement at the moment. Because the selection of models has shrunk significantly. Instead of five Fire TV devices, Amazon only offers three: the Fire TV Stick, the Fire TV Stick Lite and the Fire TV Cube. The Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max models, however, have disappeared from the mail order company.

The reason for this is a ruling by the Munich Regional Court. Accordingly, Amazon is violating Nokia’s streaming patent with the 4K TV sticks and is no longer allowed to sell the devices in this country. However, sales by other dealers are not prohibited. However, once the current batch is sold out, they may no longer receive new models. You can currently buy the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max from MediaMarkt, Tink and Aldi, among others. Tink is currently offering you the best price:

In addition to the two sticks, the in-house Fire TV televisions are also affected by the ruling. Amazon has also removed this from its offering. However, the retailer continues to sell Fire TV televisions from other manufacturers – such as the F2 from Xiaomi, but also models from Panasonic, TCL and Toshiba.

In a statement, which you can find in full below, Amazon expressed its disappointment with the district court’s ruling. The mail order company accuses Nokia of charging excessive fees for the use of the patent. The disputed patent is a contribution to a fundamental technology and, according to the law, must be made available to licensees on fair terms. Nokia rejects Amazon’s allegations, according to a report by Spiegel.

We consider the decision of the Munich Regional Court to be wrong and are confident that the situation will be resolved soon. The ruling has no impact on existing customers and a wide range of Fire TV devices, including our popular Fire TV Stick, remain available on Amazon.de. We are always willing to pay a fair price for patent licenses and have worked with a number of companies to license video patents of this type. Nokia demanded more than all of these companies combined and rejected our fair and industry standard offer. We regret that Nokia is taking these measures to limit customer choice.

Amazon

In the past, there has been a dispute between various companies over the amount of fees for such patents. A possible landmark ruling on this is expected from a British court in 2025.

Anyone who has bought one of the affected Fire TV sticks or televisions from Amazon can continue to use them without any problems and without restrictions.
