Paula Badosa: Number 15 in the tennis world rankings causes a racism scandal

Paula Bardosa caused a serious racism scandal. While visiting a Chinese restaurant, her trainer Pol Toledo Bagué posted a disastrous photo of the Spaniard. The number 15 in the world rankings can be seen imitating an Asian face with chopsticks.

A short time later, the post was deleted and the girlfriend of tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas immediately apologized. “I’m sorry and take full responsibility for my mistake,” she wrote on social media.

She was not aware that it could be offensive. «We didn’t imitate Asian people. I just played with my wrinkles and my face. “I love Asia and have many Asian friends,” she added in her apology.

The Spaniard actually wanted to take part in the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan. But the former number two in the world rankings withdrew. She justified her withdrawal with a gastrointestinal illness. She will be replaced at the tournament by the Italian Lucia Bronzetti (WTA 85).

It remains to be seen what will happen next for the Spaniard. At her last tournament she played her way to the semi-finals. At the China Open in Beijing she lost to the American Coco Gauff (WTA 4) in three sets (6:4, 4:6, 2:6).
