Wendy’s just released a SpongeBob-themed Krabby Patty meal – here’s my honest review

Ready to feel old? SpongeBob SquarePants premiered – wait for it –25 years ago in July 1999. To celebrate its silver anniversary, Nickelodeon teamed up with Wendy’s to bring one of the cartoon’s most iconic features from the screen to the menu: the Krabby Patty. For the occasion, the chain not only created a burger, but also fries to go with it And a limited-time, themed Frosty at that. After seeing the Krabby Patty Kollab Meal all over my Instagram feed since its launch on October 8th, I had to find out if it was worth the hype. Read on for a food editor’s honest review.

  • What is that: a quarter-pound fresh beef patty, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion and “a very special secret sauce,” all on a toasted bun

I love the fact that Wendy’s kept the Krabby Patty sauce ingredients for The Krabby Patty Kollab Burger a secret. (Seriously, it doesn’t list the ingredients, just the allergens.) Even though I wanted to pound on the counter and say, “Ravioli, ravioli, give me the recipes,” I refrained from doing so. One of the allergens is egg, so it is safe to assume that the sauce contains mayonnaise. It tasted like typical pink, spicy burger sauce, but had a more pronounced mustard/cucumber note. I also appreciate the double portion of cheese for an extra creamy bite. The onion, lettuce and cucumber provided some much-needed crunch.

I wanted the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty to be my favorite part of the meal, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. It did smells incredible; I took off the lid and was blown away by the smell of juicy mango. But unfortunately the taste was pretty bland and I had to dig to the bottom of the cup to get to the swirl, so it mostly just tasted like vanilla soft serve until the end. I think if the consistency of the puree was thicker it would be easier to stir and combine with the Frosty. (It would also have been nice if some had been drizzled on the sides of the cup.) Once I got to the bottom, the flavor was more intense, a bit like a mango Dum Dums lollipop. I wish it had more pineapple flavor, perhaps with a few pieces of fruit a la Dole Whip. Not bad, but not insightful.

This timeless side was divine as always, or at least it has been since Wendy’s introduced its Hot & Crispy Fry Guarantee in 2021. In my experience, the skin-on fries are always just salty enough, piping hot, and with a good mix of mushy (my favorite). ) and crispy potatoes. I love them so much that they came third in my ranking of the best fast food fries. They may not have been jazzed up in SpongeBob style, but I wasn’t mad about it.
