The rematch in Courtney, France covers many topics in CT’s 2nd District

NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) – Candidates for Congress in Connecticut’s 2nd District went head-to-head in a debate Thursday night.

Channel 3 is partnered with The Day of New London newspaper and the League of Women Voters to kick off the debate between Democratic incumbent Rep. Joe Courtney and Republican challenger Mike France.

Courtney and France faced off at Connecticut College in New London.

The debate was about many things, including affordable housing, immigration, women’s rights and other important issues of concern to many voters.

It was a rematch for the two candidates.

France lost to Courtney in 2022 by about 50,000 votes.

The Democrat has represented Connecticut’s 2nd District since 2006.

He argued his track record of creating jobs in a district full of large companies like Electric Boat.

France made arguments about inflation, including the cost and how many Americans struggled with it. He blamed Democrats like Courtney.

“We saw inflation rise to 9 percent, something we haven’t seen in decades,” France said. “We saw an increase in mortgages; some we haven’t seen for over 30 years. These are the effects of a failed economic policy.”

“In my opinion, housing is the biggest cost issue for people,” Courtney argued. “The solution to the housing shortage is to create more housing. In Washington, I work with homebuilders in Connecticut and advocate for more mixed-income housing tax credit developments.”

Election day is November 5th.
