Alexander Zverev confirms tournament commitment for Germany team

Alexander Zverev is playing for Germany again. However, the world number three has currently only decided to take part in the United Cup, which will be held in Australia at the turn of the year. A decision about his participation in the Davis Cup finals in Malaga (November 19th to 24th) is still pending.

At the beginning of this year, Zverev used the United Cup as preparation for the Australian Open in Melbourne and won the mixed tournament together with Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund.

It is not yet clear who his side will play in the next edition in Perth and Sydney (December 27th to January 5th).

“Playing for your country is of course very special and I have the best memories from this year,” Zverev is quoted as saying in the tournament organizers’ statement: “It’s the first week of the year and we all want to be in Australia and against .” The best players in the world are playing, and that’s exactly what the United Cup offers.

The Davis Cup, on the other hand, fits Zverev (27) less into his season planning. The traditional team competition, in which Germany faces Canada in the quarter-finals (November 20), would shorten Zverev’s much-needed break before the new season. A commitment to the United Cup does not make it any more likely.

Team captain Michael Kohlmann has already nominated his selection, but left a place open for Zverev. He recently suffered from pneumonia and was eliminated early from the Masters in Shanghai. According to the plan, he continues in Vienna, Paris and at the ATP Finals in Turin (November 10th to 17th).
