New Mexico State play-caller Tyler Wright has been fired following an investigation into social media posts

New Mexico State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright has been fired and is no longer with the team, a university spokesperson confirmed to the Las Cruces Sun-News Friday morning. It was first reported by Sam Guzman at KTSM.

Wright’s firing comes two weeks after the Sun-News was told by Aggies athletic director Mario Moccia that he “will not be on the team” while the university investigated the more than 150 racist, sexist and homophobic posts on his X account, the platform. formerly called, investigated Twitter, which the Sun-News reported on the evening of September 27th. Wright deleted all NMSU affiliations from his job title in his account bio.

Wright’s posts also included nearly 100 comments about LGBTQ+ people, including homophobic slurs, more than 60 references to Kony – including many racist comments about Africans and African Americans – at least a dozen demeaning posts towards women, and nine posts stereotyping Hispanics and Latinos and humiliated and five uses of common racial slurs directed at black people.

Posts that could be considered racist, sexist or homophobic were posted around the time Wright began his coaching career as wide receivers coach at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, in the fall of 2015.

The posts range from 2011 to 2014, when Wright was a wide receiver at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. He later became a football intern at the school in 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile and bio on New Mexico State’s athletics website. Wright played for Tarleton for four seasons, helping the then-Division II school become co-Lone Star Conference champions in 2013 and racking up 432 receiving yards in 2014.

Wright was in his third season with the Aggies, initially as their offensive coordinator. From 2022 to 2023, he served as NM State’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator under former coach Jerry Kill. While Wright played in the Aggies’ first four games, NM State ranked second-to-last among FBS teams in yards per game and seventh in points per game. Aggies offensive line coach and running game coordinator Andrew Mitchell has called plays in games against New Mexico and Jacksonville State during Wright’s investigation, and he is expected to remain the interim play caller.

The Aggies (1-5) face Louisiana Tech (2-3) at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
