Does 500 euros really have to be there?

Does 500 euros really have to be there?

Smart watches are becoming more powerful and more versatile every year – but also more expensive. The top smartwatches now cost almost as much as a flagship cell phone. Do I get everything I need with a cheap smartwatch?

While you used to only be able to buy a single Apple Watch model, the smartwatch market has now become more similar to cell phones: There are various Pro, Ultra and Ultimate versions to choose from. For the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (for the test) you pay over 800 euros, for the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra (for the test) you pay a little less – but still over 500 euros. Does it really have to be a premium model or does the price tip from our best list also work?

When it comes to handling, there is little difference between cheap and expensive models. The market has developed so that almost all smartwatches have a good OLED display with a brightness sensor. It is controlled via touchscreen, buttons and sometimes a crown. None of the branded products show any real weaknesses. Some cheaper models can score points when it comes to battery life, but basically the price doesn’t make a big difference here either.

The focus is on the features: The cheap smartwatch models usually do not offer an eSIM function for mobile communications – so they are limited when the cell phone is not nearby. The standard body sensors are almost always included, but extra functions such as ECG are often missing. Many top models can now even be used for diving, while the cheaper watches can only be used for swimming. There are also differences in performance and storage space.

You can see the differences in detail in the following comparison of the current test winner and the price tip from our smartwatch best list. If you want to know more about the devices, you can find all the information in our smartwatch buying guide.
