It was almost to be expected that Deniz Undav had thought of something special just in case. As befits a joker, the German national team’s match winner used his first brace to celebrate his goal in an unconventional manner. Symbolically, the 28-year-old stroked his pink away jersey when he scored the goals (30th and 36th minutes) in the 2-1 win in Bosnia-Herzegovina: exactly the gesture that his new strike colleague Ermedin Demirovic usually used at VfB Stuttgart.

Wirtz and Mittelstädt help score goals

But Undav had whispered to him: “If I score a goal, I’ll take advantage of his celebration. And when he hits, he shows mine.” Now only the late starter had reason to celebrate with the well-known detour via SV Meppen, with Florian Wirtz and then Maximilian Mittelstädt putting the balls on his feet in an exemplary manner.

“He does it very well, doesn’t need many chances to score, that’s the key. He’s very smart, has a technically strong finish,” praised national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who still appreciated something about the rascal who grew up in Varel in the Friesland district. VfB Stuttgart has now signed him on a permanent basis.

He’s a really cool guy with funny sayings. He is a positive, life-affirming guy who is good for us – on and off the pitch.

Without a strong striker, the task would be mandatory at world number 75. Things may not have gone so smoothly in Zenica, Bosnia. “I’m already satisfied. It took us a while to get into the game and we lost too many balls,” said Nagelsmann. “Once we started doing it with more patience, we played very dominantly.”

Nagelsmann: “Given the opportunity, it was good overall”

The nearest group opponent and fellow competitor, the Netherlands, demonstrated at the same time that such fulfillment of duty is not a sure-fire success. The European Championship semi-finalist achieved a 1-1 draw in Hungary with a lot of hassle and also lost defense boss Virgil van Dijk to a yellow-red card.

Nagelsmann also played his part in the serious performance in the small Bilino Polje stadium in front of 13,500 spectators, who limited the experiments to the bare minimum despite seven cancellations. The rarely used goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and the rarely seen striker Tim Kleindienst are making their debut in the starting line-up, but the 37-year-old has retained the basic structure.

Farewell for Neuer, Kroos, Gündogan and Müller

If his team remains on the road to success against the “Oranje”, the last group games against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Freiburg (November 16th/RTL) and against Hungary in Budapest (November 19th/ZDF) could be used for this purpose, including extensive personnel shifts to test.

What is certain is that Oliver Baumann will move between the posts against “Oranje” – before that, Manuel Neuer, like Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gündogan and Thomas Müller, will be farewelled in Munich after his resignation. After the final whistle, Nagelsmann didn’t want to be tied down to whether the job sharing in goal would continue: “It depends on the performance in the league. If someone gets ten goals, probably not.”

Nagelsmann: Nübel was not to blame for the goal

The national coach absolved Nübel of any blame for the 38-year-old Edzin Dzeko’s (70th) goal: “He saw the header very late, so he could only react very late.” And so the ball and ball catcher were behind the line . A scene that had no consequences thanks to Deniz Undav.
