European Football Championship: Austria starts with fireworks

European Football Championship

European champion Austria started its mission to defend its title with fireworks. Team boss Max Sommer’s selection overwhelmed host Hungary 58-3 in the first game of Group A in Budapest on Saturday and thus took the first step into the knockout round. After the first quarter there was nothing to shake the red-white-red victory.

The party in Kincsem Park Nemzeti Agarstadion in the shadow of the Budapest harness racing track was dominated by the Austrians right from the start. After just one quarter it was 21:0 for the guests and at halftime it was already 31:3 for the summer team. Tobias Bonatti, Yannick Mayr and quarterback Nico Hrouda made it into the Hungarian end zone in the first twelve minutes of the game. Mayr doubled before the break.

In the second half, Richard Weber, Julian Kapellari, Johannes Schütz and Florian Wegan contributed further touchdowns to the unchallenged success. “I was really extremely pleased with how our boys pulled through and never left any doubt about who was the better team on the field.” “I’m proud that Team Austria played today the way Team Austria should play” said team boss Sommer after the party.

Football team starts the European Championship with a resounding victory

Austria’s American football national team started its mission to defend its title at the European Championships with a clear victory. With a home win against Serbia at the end of October, the AFBÖ selection qualified for the semi-finals in August 2025.

The next opponent is Serbia on October 27th (1 p.m., live on ORF Sport +). With another win, the Austrian had the semi-final ticket in his pocket. The hoped-for duel with Germany could take place there. However, the Germans first have to assert themselves against Sweden and Great Britain. By the way, the mode and venue of the final phase in 2025 are still unclear. The Austrian association’s preference would be a Final Four tournament.
