A chance meeting turned into a bond for life. Tennis star Garbine Muguruza met a fan while walking in Central Park in 2021, and the couple got married a good three years later.

Hollywood couldn’t have staged their story better: the former world number one Garbine Muguruza and Arthur Borges said “I do” in Marbella this week.

The first meeting between the two was purely coincidental. “My hotel was near Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” said the Spanish woman in an interview with HOLA! Spain.

The two-time Grand Slam winner noticed herself in New York in 2021 because of the US Open. While walking in Central Park, a fan approached her and asked for a selfie. This developed into a love affair that culminated in the wedding this week. That fan is now her husband: Arthur Borges.

Muguruza’s husband is not active in tennis himself. Borges works in the fashion industry, including as a model. At the time they met, he was working for the luxury brand Tom Ford in New York City.

Successful tennis career

Muguruza, who announced her retirement in April, has had a successful career. In 2016 she triumphed at the French Open. A year later, she won the Wimbledon women’s singles title by defeating Serena Williams in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.

After the US Open in 2017, she reached the top of the women’s tennis world rankings. In the same year she was named world champion by the ITF and voted player of the year by the WTA.

She won her last title in 2021. In Mexico she became the first Spanish woman to win the ATP finals.
