Mumbai Police have arrested two of the suspected attackers – Singh from Haryana and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap, a native of Uttar Pradesh. The third accused, Shiv Kumar, is absconding and efforts are on to trace him, police said.

The trio have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder, as well as under the provisions of the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act, they said.

Giving details of Singh’s criminal record, Kaithal Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kalia told PTI that the accused was arrested in a murder case in 2019 and was later released on bail.

Another case was registered against him after a mobile phone was recovered from him in jail in 2022, the Haryana police officer said. He said he had been charged in another case with the beating of a juvenile.

Singh’s grandmother Phuli Devi told reporters in Kaithal that the family disowned him 11 years ago. “His parents died. The family has rejected him for eleven years. He means nothing to us now,” she told reporters at her home in her village of Narar.

When asked what work Singh did, his grandmother replied: “He did nothing. He got out of jail on bail. He served four years in prison.”

She said he must receive exemplary punishment for his actions as provided for by the law.

Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the killing of the former Maharashtra minister from various angles, including a possible contract killing, a business rivalry or a threat over a slum redevelopment project, officials said on Sunday.

They also checked a social media post in which a suspected member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the murder, police said.

Baba Siddique (66) was attacked and shot at by three men in Kher Nagar in Mumbai’s Bandra district on Saturday evening, right outside the office of his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai where he was declared dead.
