A pilot was killed and a passenger was injured when a small plane crashed in a Georgia neighborhood

One person died in a small plane crash in a residential neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia, on Sunday evening, local police said.

Savannah police said in a brief statement that officers were dispatched to the crash site on East 66th Street, about 3 miles south of the city’s historic landmark district.

“The pilot is deceased and the passenger has minor injuries,” Savannah police wrote on X, adding, “No one on the ground was injured.”

The Savannah Fire Department union posted on Facebook that the accident occurred just before 10 p.m

The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association released a photo of a mangled plane lying on the ground in front of a home.

The cause of the crash was initially unknown.

Police said the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
