Lübeck live: Crash with the roof: Travemünde tennis club in distress

Lübeck – Travemünde: The Travemünde Yoga Center has been in existence for ten years now in the clubhouse of the “Travemünde Tennis and Hockey Club” (TTHC). The rental income is important for the club. But after storm damage, the practice room can no longer be used, and construction site supports protect the ceiling from collapsing. This puts the club in trouble as a landlord because there is no money for repairs. A fundraising campaign is now to be started.

The insurance doesn’t pay
The course had just ended when, in mid-June 2024, the ceiling in the large practice room of the Travemünde Yoga Center began to bulge. “And then all the yoga students are out,” says owner Steffi Kinter. Possibly not quite professionally, as she initially covers the ceiling with a ladder and two pink yoga blocks. Then the roofers came and looked at everything. The pink yoga blocks were replaced with steel supports. And it stayed that way. Because the insurance company, says the club’s board of directors, does not recognize the damage as storm damage.

50,000 euros that the club doesn’t have
The amount of damage is a good 50,000 euros, says second chairman Klaus Bergmann. With him and the first chairwoman Sandra Vincent, the TTHC has had a new board since September 19th. He is in the process of moving the club forward with a fresh internet presence, social media and a new marketing department. But the broken roof poses major problems for the club: there is simply no money for repairs. Maybe a quarter of the total, says Klaus Bergmann. And with that, other bills would actually have to be paid. And without the rental income from the yoga center it wouldn’t work anyway: “We can’t afford to leave this place empty,” says Klaus Bergman. That would be a catastrophe for the club, which has existed for 75 years. And also for the yoga center, which currently has to move to Travemünde in a different way.

Good youth work in the club
According to the board, the TTHC is continuing to challenge the insurance company’s decision, but now needs a solution. And hopes for donations. After all, it is a sports club with around 230 members. Among other things, the club organizes the well-known “Travemünder Open”. And for children and young people the “Wendelborn Cup”. Board member Klaus Bergmann points to the club’s good youth work.

Tennis courts in Zippel Park and hockey courts at Steenkamp
The indoor and outdoor courts of the Travemünde Tennis and Hockey Club (TTHC) are located at Parkallee 3 (Dr. Zippel Park). The former restaurant and current yoga center is also located on the complex. The hockey pitches are located off Steenkamp, although this area has been idle for a long time: “There is currently no active hockey being played at the TTHC”. Regarding external considerations that have not yet been publicly communicated about handing over the hockey area to another youth facility in Travemünde, board member Klaus Bergmann believes that a board resolution is required. “But I think so.”

The appeal for donations began shortly
The appeal for donations should be published in the next few days. Information about the fundraising campaign and further questions can also be found at [email protected] or on the website www.travemuenderthc.de.
