Transferring passkeys to another provider: FIDO Alliance announces new format and protocol

Many large providers have recently added support for Pass key introduced which can replace the use of passwords in the accounts used. Now the FIDO Alliance has announced that the flexibility in dealing with the passkeys should be made possible and allow them to be transferred from one provider to another. Actually, this is not possible yet.

Some users swear by passkeys, others consider them to be insufficiently secure due to the way they are implemented. The FIDO Alliance should also know this and has now published a plan to soon enable the transfer of a passkey from one provider to another. For this purpose, an interface should be created with which users can transfer their created passkeys from one password manager or other management tool to another.

The Credential Exchange Format (CXF) has been developed for transmission and is to be transmitted via Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP). This should not only be used to transfer passkeys, but also other forms of passwords and access authorizations. The new format is encrypted and therefore fundamentally much more secure than the usual import and export via CSV file.

1Password is the first password manager to announce that it will support the new format and protocol as soon as it is officially approved and available. Other companies such as Google, Dashlane, Bitwarden and NordPass have worked on the specifications and will therefore also want to support them very soon. It will probably take a few more months for all members to be verified.
