Hollywood crime has been making headlines lately, and it hasn’t been at the box office. Although Sean “Diddy” Combs and unnamed associates have been in the spotlight, a lesser-known but equally disturbing case has been the focus of publicity in recent years.

Two summers ago, Hollywood producer David Pearce was charged after a seven-month investigation in the deaths of two women, model Christy Giles and her friend Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola. The women’s bodies were found in two different hospitals in November 2021. Pearce was initially arrested and charged with the alleged rape and sexual assault of four other women before being arrested for those crimes.

LAPD investigators allege that Pearce, along with two colleagues, actor Brandt Osborn and cameraman Michael Ansbach, met the victims at a late-night warehouse party in Los Angeles before continuing the night at Pearce’s apartment.

At the time of the original arraignment, Pearce’s defense attorney stated that there was a lack of evidence, although surveillance caught Pearce and Osborne leaving the warehouse at around 5 a.m. on the day in question before eventually going to their shared apartment.

According to a toxicology report, both Giles and Cabrales-Arzola had elevated levels of fentanyl in their systems, along with cocaine and MDMA. In Giles’ case, the rape drug GHB was also found in her body, leading investigators to suspect the women were drugged before being attacked by Pearce.

Additionally, it was reported that Pearce was researching countries without extradition treaties with the United States and was found with his passport and $30,000 in cash in his hand when authorities took him into custody. Although Pearce’s lawyer argued that his bail should be reduced from $3.4 million, this was rejected on the grounds that he posed a “threat to society” and was allegedly a serial rapist.

In addition to the murder charges filed by the LA County District Attorney’s Office, Pearce also faces multiple felony charges relating to individual incidents involving seven women that allegedly occurred over a period of a decade, from August 2020 to November 2021 , all of whom had a violent sexual relationship.

In total, Pearce is charged with 11 counts, and the state has decided to consolidate his sexual assault and murder charges into one trial. The charges also include delivery of a controlled substance (fentanyl).

Powerful drugs have been at the center of other recent mass-casualty incidents in Hollywood, most notably the death of Matthew Perry.

Pearce has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody at a Los Angeles jail awaiting a trial date. If found guilty, he could face 128 years to life in prison.

The slow migration of criminal proceedings

Although Pearce was charged a month after the deaths of Giles and Cabrales-Arzola, why are his other criminal charges, originally from 2010, only now coming to light?

Before charges can be filed, investigators must gather sufficient evidence. This can take a long time depending on how many crimes have been committed, how serious each crime is, and what evidence is strong enough to prosecute. This includes gathering information such as witness statements, forensic analysis, surveillance footage and expert analysis.

In total, Pearce is charged with 11 counts, and the state has decided to consolidate his sexual assault and murder charges into one trial. The charges also include delivery of a controlled substance (fentanyl).

From there, the prosecutor’s office must review the case and decide whether or not to file charges based on the documents presented. Once a defendant is charged, he or she does not automatically receive a trial date, and even when one is set, it is not uncommon for it to be postponed several times or remain undetermined, as was the case with Pearce.

Because the charges against Pearce span a decade, compiling hard evidence for each victim requires time and thoroughness. Additionally, investigators must summarize any patterns and connections between cases to determine whether the charges will be filed together or separately.

It remains to be seen whether additional charges will be filed against Pearce or whether additional victims may need to be found.

A story as old as Hollywood time

We have seen several high-profile cases in recent years (Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, etc.) spanning decades of alleged criminal behavior. Often these involve men in power, a mix of drugs and young, vulnerable women as victims.

Pearce’s allegations are just one case of many that have made the national news. Although his case may have been pushed into the background as better-known Hollywood figures have moved into the spotlight, that doesn’t make the loss of life any less dire.

Unfortunately, this type of ending is all too common in Los Angeles and history keeps repeating itself as more and more events emerge. As glittering as Hollywood’s allure is, it often masks the darkness on the other side.
