Dighton police arrest two people for allegedly carrying replica air rifles

DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) – Dighton police officers said they arrested two people during vehicle checks yesterday who were allegedly carrying replica air rifles.

According to officials, an officer was on patrol when he stopped a motor vehicle for an expired registration.

During his roadside interview, the officer allegedly noticed the handle of a revolver near the driver.

The officer quickly took the driver into custody.

Officials said further investigation revealed the revolver was a full-size replica of a BB gun with a working cylinder and replica cartridges.

The driver allegedly admitted to carrying it for intimidation purposes as he believed its appearance would “put off” others.

Another officer was patrolling when he also stopped a vehicle because the driver was allegedly exceeding the speed limit.

Police said that during his roadside encounter, police informed the officer that the vehicle registration status required the motor vehicle to be towed.

During the vehicle inventory, replica firearms were discovered in the vehicle.

One of these “guns” was reportedly in a holster, mimicking carrying a real firearm.

“These incidents highlight the urgent need to raise awareness about replica firearms, which can closely resemble real weapons,” the department said on Facebook.

“Our officers’ responses demonstrated excellent restraint and good judgment and contributed to a positive outcome in potentially sensitive situations. “Both officers acted quickly and effectively and ensured the safety of everyone involved,” they said.
