Trump emphasizes support for Cruz amid tight Texas Senate race

Former President Trump emphasized his support for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in Truth Social posts early Tuesday morning, ahead of the senator’s one-on-one debate with challenger Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas).

“Ted is one of the strongest senators in the country on border security, while his opponent, Colin Allred, is a radical open-border extremist who will put our country and our security LAST.” Ted, on the other hand, will ALWAYS care about Texas and America Putting it FIRST,” the former president said in one of his posts.

“Ted Cruz has my complete and unqualified approval – HE WILL NOT FILE YOU!” Trump added.

Cruz’s fight for Senate re-election is one of a few races that could decide who controls the Senate next year. He leads Allred by 2.7 points, according to an average of Texas polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.

“Although I have verbally supported Ted on numerous occasions because of the importance of race and Ted’s importance to the future of our country, I thought the support should be put in writing,” Trump said in a later Truth Social post.

Democrats have reason for optimism as Allred enters the home stretch of his tough fight to defeat Cruz.

The Cook Political Report earlier this month shifted the Texas Senate race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican,” a sign of momentum for Allred.

“Anybody who says, ‘That’s just not happening in Texas’ — it’s not happening until it happens,” pollster Brett Loyd told The Hill last month about the possibility of Allred pulling off an upset.

Allred and Cruz will debate Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the WFAA studios in Dallas.

The Hill has reached out to the Allred campaign.
