Preload on PS5 and PC is surprisingly small

In a few days the preload of the shooter “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”, which will be released at the end of October, will start. As the first figures show, downloads this year are relatively manageable.

In recent years, players have repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that the download and installation sizes of the “Call of Duty”-Titles continuously increasing.

For example, it was released in 2023 “Modern Warfare 3” with all elements in an impressive size of more than 200 gigabytes. After Activision announced a remedy in the summer, the first figures are now available. Warzone has been separated from the main game

The significantly smaller downloads compared to the previous year are due to a change that Activision discussed in more detail in August of this year. On the one hand, the developers separated the free-to-play battle royal shooter “Call of Duty: Warzone” from the main game.

This means that this is no longer automatic with the respective main game, which results in a significantly smaller download.

Another innovation concerns the expanded texture streaming technology. This moves rarely used content to a streaming cache, which, according to Activision, results in reduced storage requirements. The feature also allows players to choose whether they want to use optimized streaming for better graphics or minimal streaming to reduce bandwidth requirements.

When does the preload start?

The only final question that remains is when pre-orderers will be allowed to download the data required for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”. The answer: The preload of the shooter started on both the PS4 and PS5 on October 20, 2024 and therefore in just a few days.

Another innovation this year is that Activision is offering early access for those who pre-order the special editions Abandoned.

This means that all players will get started on October 25, 2024, regardless of the edition purchased. The PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are powered.
