In a survey, Americans express deep distrust of mass media

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION– Americans’ trust in the mass media has fallen to a record low ahead of November’s election, according to a new poll released Monday by Gallup.

About 36% of respondents said they had “no trust at all” in the mass media, while only 31% expressed “a lot” or “fairly much” trust and 33% expressed “not very much” trust. according to the Gallup poll.

The low trust in the media comes as mainstream media outlets are criticized for bias, such as the lack of coverage of President Joe Biden’s mental acuity ahead of his debate against former President Donald Trump.

According to previous Gallup polls, Americans’ trust in mainstream media fell to a low of 32% in 2016, reaching a low of 32% in 2023.

Democrats expressed the most confidence in the mainstream media’s ability to report news “fully, accurately and fairly,” with 54% saying they trust them, according to the poll. Age differences also made a difference in ratings: 74% of Democrats ages 65 and older had a fair or great level of trust in the media, compared to just 31% of Democrats ages 18 to 29.

Compared to Democrats, Republicans and independents expressed significantly lower trust in the mass media. According to the survey, only 12% of Republicans and 27% of independents said they have a lot or a fair amount of trust in the media.

The U.S. legislature also received poor ratings, with only 34% of people saying they trust it.

ABC journalists Linsey Davis and David Muir came under fire after they moderated the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC News on September 10, as many viewers of the debate felt they were too injustice against Trump was manipulated. Viewers expressed outrage that Trump was repeatedly fact-checked by debate moderators while Harris was largely unchallenged in her claims.

While many people expressed concern about Biden’s mental functioning following his performance in the presidential debate against Trump on June 27, several corporate news outlets attempted to attribute Biden’s performance in the debate to his cold.

Gallup’s poll was conducted between September 3 and 15 and surveyed a random sample of 1,007 adults from all U.S. states with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
