NFL | Despite Hail Mary and coaching change: Jets lose to Bills

Even another successful Hail Mary in his long NFL career didn’t help Aaron Rodgers. With a new coach on the sidelines, the New York Jets are narrowly defeated by group rivals Buffalo.

For the fourth time in his career he did it, the Gunslinger. Aaron Rodgers once again turned a Hail Mary into a touchdown. His 52-yard desperation pass with the clock running out at the end of the second quarter found wide receiver Alan Lazard (114 total passing yards) in a tight crowd in the Bills’ end zone. With the extra point, the New York Jets reduced the lead to 17:20 at halftime and gained hope of being able to turn this important duel in the AFC East around.

In the end it was 20:23, which put the Jets at 2-4 and, for the time being, well behind the Bills (4-2). Visibly frustrated, the 40-year-old Rodgers commented on the bitter defeat. “It’s always the little things. I want to win these games.” The Jets’ game was “terrible”, especially in the red zone, and there were two missed field goals. “It’s disappointing,” said Rodgers.

After parting ways with head coach Robert Saleh, the New Yorkers went into this Monday Night Game with defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich in primary responsibility.

Interception ensures a preliminary decision

Although they managed to equalize in the second half with a shot through the bars, the Bills countered with a field goal to make it 23:20. A Rodgers interception with 1:52 minutes left ultimately decided this game.

“We found a way to win. We got a little sloppy in the second half,” said Bills playmaker Josh Allen (19/25, 215 passing yards), who spoke of a “team win.” “We fought back, I’m proud of everyone.”

For him it was the 100th NFL game, which he crowned with two touchdown passes – unlike Rodgers, Allen did not produce an INT, but rather ran into the opposing end zone with a short run in the first quarter to make it 7:3.

The AFC duel was characterized by many penalties that resulted in a total of 200 yards of field loss and were “ridiculous” in Rodgers’ eyes. “Then we can play another sport,” complained the veteran, whose 294 passing yards (23/35) in this game and two TDs couldn’t help him win.
