First pictures of the monster horror with Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller star in director Scott Derrickson’s unusual horror-romance The Gorge. Now there are first impressions.

Scott Derrickson is actually at home in the horror genre. He made his film debut with the unfortunately quite average “Hellraiser: Inferno”, but “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” already showed the filmmaker’s talent for catching the audience off guard. It’s not for nothing that his 2012 horror thriller “Sinister – If you see it, you’re already lost” is considered one of the most effective shockers of all time. However, the general audience will – how else could it be – primarily remember his Marvel contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) “Doctor Strange”. An experience that the 58-year-old doesn’t want to miss, even though he ultimately left “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” to return to his cinematic roots.

The horror genre has a cathartic effect for Derrickson: The filmmaker grew up in a violent environment, as he revealed to Empire (via Movieweb). But even without this sad background, he thinks that it is important as a filmmaker or as a film fan to not only concentrate and limit yourself to positive and happy films (via Decent Films):

“I think it’s important for anyone who takes cinema seriously not to limit themselves to just optimistic or happy films.” I think that’s a problem. You have to be willing to let the art of cinema take you into darker realms if you want to make the most of it. There are people who shouldn’t watch horror films – and I have no problem with that.”

As if he had to set a good example, Derrickson is once again heading down the path of darkness as a filmmaker – only this time for the streaming service Apple TV+ and with a film that wants to be not just horror, but also sci-fi and romance: “The Gorge”. The first pictures have just been published:

“The Gorge” is a star-studded sci-fi horror

A huge and deep gorge somewhere in the world that few people even know exists. There is a watchtower on each side, constantly manned by elite troops. Two of them are an American sniper (Miles Teller) and a Lithuanian sniper (Anya Taylor-Joy). Your job is not to stop others from descending into the chasm, but to stop what lurks within from getting out. They themselves do not know what moves in the dark. Without knowledge of the threat, their service resembles a monotonous everyday life – until they approach each other from a distance. But when they finally discover the secret of the gorge, it is quickly too late.

It’s not just the promising premise of “The Gorge” that’s astonishing, but also the star ensemble that Derrickson was able to mobilize for it: alongside Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” “) “) also stars Sigourney Weaver (“Aliens: The Return”), “William Houston (“The Last Duel”) as well as Samantha Coughlan, Alessandro Garcia and Julianna Kurokawa. “The Gorge” is still to come 2025 will be released via Apple TV+.
