Police arrest suspect in fatal shooting of woman exercising on trail in Nashville

Oct. 16 (UPI) — A 29-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of Alyssa Lokits, who was killed Monday while training on a forest trail in Tennessee.

Paul Park, 29, of Brentwood, Tennessee, south of Nashville, was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal homicide.

Authorities said he was taken into custody by investigators around 3 p.m. EDT while driving on Autumn Crossing Way in Davidson County, minutes after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Lokits, 34, was shot Monday around 5:30 p.m. on the Mill Creek Greenway, a popular hiking trail in Nashville. According to authorities, she was found in the wooded area with a gunshot wound and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died.

Witnesses told police a woman was heard screaming for help and claiming someone was trying to rape her before a gunshot was heard. A man was probably seen fleeing the parking lot in a dark four-door sedan.

Authorities said Tuesday that an investigation revealed Lokits was walking in the area of ​​the Greenway trail when a man stepped out from between two parked cars and began following her.

Metro Nashville police said they were able to identify Park as a suspect after a local resident provided police with dashcam footage from a car parked along the Greenway trailhead Monday evening that showed clear images of the suspect and his vehicle showed.

Authorities said Park was seen returning to his gray BMW sedan with scratches on his arms and blood on his clothing.
