The historic SS United States in Philadelphia was broken into by suspects on surveillance video

The SS United States, a decommissioned ocean liner docked in Philadelphia, was recently robbed by at least five suspects who secretly sneaked aboard the historic 1950s ship.

Around 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 2, at least three people were reportedly caught on surveillance video illegally climbing into an opening in the 990-foot-long ship’s hull at Pier 82.

Police said the suspects left the ship about three hours later with several items. The next day, Philadelphia police reported that the suspected maritime marauders stole several batteries and tools and damaged the ship.

FOX 29 reported that a 17-year-old boy turned himself in after the incident.

The unknown teenager is charged with burglary and trespassing.

Philadelphia police are asking the public to call or text them at 215-686-TIPS (8477) if they have any additional information about the identities of the other suspects.

The alleged break-in occurred a day after the ship was part of a tentative agreement authorizing the SS United States to build the world’s largest artificial reef in Florida.

The $10 million deal calls for the derelict ocean liner to be towed from Philadelphia to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, where it will be sunk offshore and converted into a diving destination.

Okaloosa County in Florida promised to open a “land-based museum and immersive experience” created by the SS United States Conservancy.

“Having the opportunity to have the SS United States right here on our shores is a legacy and a legacy that transcends generations,” said Okaloosa County Commissioner Mel Ponder. “I’m really excited about what it’s doing not just for the diving community, but for the fishing community, but for the community as a whole.”

The ship still holds the New York-to-Britain transatlantic speed record, which it set more than 70 years ago.
