Android: Gboard users can quickly choose from different fonts

The keyboard app Gboard offers users a range of personalization options to customize the interface. Now another customization option appears in the beta version of the app, which is quite interesting due to its nature. Users can choose between different fonts used on the app’s buttons.

Gboard has long allowed users to customize the appearance of the entire keyboard app. You can hide individual keys, adjust the height of the entire keyboard, use an alternative color palette or a background image, and more. The current Gboard beta version 14.7 now shows a selection of the font used on the keys. During the test phase, users can choose from two different fonts.

The choice is between “Gboard standard” and “system standard”. There is currently no specific font to choose from, just a choice between the standards, although the smartphone standard can be set elsewhere. Gboard Default is Google Sans, while the system default can be Roboto. In the screenshot above you can see that the letters on the keys hardly differ, at least in these two available fonts. Of course, this may look different with other smartphone manufacturers.

The font selection does not only apply to the keyboard app itself and has no influence on the input fields in which text is currently being entered. It remains to be seen in which situations the selection of the font can make sense. Maybe it’s something for users who use a comic font in the Android interface and also use it on Gboard or don’t want to use it.
