Wanted man dies after a traffic stop on I-24 in Rutherford County leads to an officer-involved shooting

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal interstate shooting between Rutherford County deputies and a wanted Ohio man on Wednesday.

The TBI said the incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on I-24 East in Murfreesboro. Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a van near mile marker 86 and discovered the driver, 71-year-old Robert Michael Wemmer, who was wanted in Ohio on sexual assault charges.

Deputies confronted Wemmer about the outstanding warrant, which resulted in him not cooperating and ignoring their commands. TBI said the situation spiraled and forced a deputy to use a stun gun on Wemmer. He then produced a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire on the officers, the TBI report said.

After Wemmer fired his weapon, the police returned fire, seriously wounding Wemmer. TBI said officers rendered aid at the scene before Wemmer was taken to the hospital, where he died.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

The TBI investigation is ongoing.
