Finally in color: Amazon unveils seven new Kindles

Amazon is breaking new ground this year with the Kindle Colorsoft. It is the first Kindle with a color display and is therefore ideal for comics or picture books. It also has automatic lighting, water protection and wireless charging capability. The compact six-inch format makes the Kindle particularly mobile. Other brands such as Tolino and PocketBook already show colors on their e-ink displays, but we weren’t particularly impressed by the pale displays in the test. Whether the Kindle can offer more vivid colors will only become clear from October 30th.

The Kindle Scribe is already available in an updated version. The model series is known for the included stylus, with which we can write on the seven-inch E-Ink display almost as if we were writing on real paper. This pen revised the new edition and equips it with an eraser. In addition, the display is now surrounded by a white frame and we can now doodle directly in e-books.

The new one Kindle Paperwhite Amazon describes it as the “fastest Kindle yet”. Accordingly, the seven-inch e-reader should now work even faster and turn book pages around 25 percent faster. Plus, according to Amazon, it’s thinner than ever, waterproof and offers the highest contrast ratio of any Kindle reader.

Die Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition doubles the storage space to 32 GB, can be charged wirelessly and has automatic display lighting. The model costs just under 200 euros, while the normal version started at 169.99 euros.

In addition to Colorsoft, Scribe and Paperwhite, Amazon also leaves room for the simple one Ignite. With a compact diagonal of six inches and a weight of 158 grams, the standard reader is particularly mobile and is also the cheapest model in the Amazon portfolio. Nevertheless, there is also display lighting here, which should now be just as bright as the front light of the Kindle Paperwhite. There are no other major special features.

Amazon is also bringing new versions of the book for young readers Kindle Kids and Kindle Paperwhite Kids to the start. The child-friendly, robust cases in space, ocean, cyber or unicorn designs are particularly striking. Six months of the Amazon Kids+ subscription service are also included.

In the parent dashboard, adults can also use the mobile phone app to check how much and what their child has read on their Kindle. The two-year “worry-free guarantee” is also exciting: If the reader breaks during this time, Amazon will replace the device free of charge. Despite otherwise identical technology, the kids versions cost 10 to 20 euros more than their “normal” counterparts.
