Liz Cheney and Mary Trump sing Ted Cruz’s “Supply Closet” after the debate

Former Rep. Liz Cheney and Mary Trump took to social media to rile Sen. Ted Cruz after his debate against Rep. Colin Allred on Tuesday night.

Allred is challenging Cruz in a contentious, close race for his Senate seat in Texas. The pair faced off earlier this week in their first debate of this election cycle. The heated event focused on abortion, immigration and a number of other topical issues.

Polls this month show Cruz with a narrow majority against Allred. This was the result of a survey of potential voters conducted by the University of Houston between September 26th and October 10th Cruz has a four-point lead and a margin of error of 2.69 percent.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Cruz is up by an average of 4 points in national polls, although the gap has narrowed in recent weeks.

During the debate, Allred took a swipe at Cruz for his alleged actions on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters rioted and protested the 2020 election results over President Joe Biden’s victory.

“When that mob came, Senator Cruz hid in a supply closet,” Allred said. “That’s fine; I don’t want the mob to hurt him, I really don’t want that… You can’t just be patriotic when your team wins.”

Allred also noted during the debate that he had the support of Cheney, who served on the House special committee tasked with investigating the Jan. 6 attacks.

Democrats hold a narrow majority in the Senate but are losing a handful of key figures, including West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party.

Democrats responded to the pressure by targeting Cruz’s seat. The Republican incumbent narrowly won reelection in 2018 against then-Democratic candidate Beto O’Rouke, and some GOP groups expressed concerns that Texas could be a surprise win for their opponents in November.

Florida Sen. Rick Scott, who is running for a second term, has also been targeted by Democrats in this election. Polls have shown former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, Scott’s Democratic challenger, now just a few points away from taking the seat.

In a poll released by Marist College in early October, Scott led Mucarsel-Powell 50 percent to 48 percent among 1,410 registered voters. According to FiveThirtyEight’s tracking, Scott is ahead by an average of 4.6 points in national polls, although that gap is narrowing as Election Day approaches.
