Trump ad blames Harris for freeing Oakland journalist’s killer. That’s not true, reporters say

According to previous KQED reporting, Bey called the company a model of economic empowerment in Oakland’s black community. It was also a cover for his polygamist sect, which had been accused of rape, assault and fraud for years, they say Oaklandside Reporting.

When Bailey began investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery’s criminal activities, one of Bey’s sons, Yusuf Bey IV, found out and ordered Broussard and another employee to kill him to prevent the story from becoming public . Bey IV took over the company after his father’s death in 2003.

Broussard originally admitted to killing Bailey on his own initiative, but recanted and ultimately assisted the defense in convicting Bey IV and the other man who was present at the murder. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

The Oakland police killings and missteps prompted a group of Bay Area journalists to form the Chauncey Bailey Project to investigate the story. Peele was a member.

Peele noted that the murder appeared to have nothing to do with Harris, who has released her own campaign ads highlighting her past as a prosecutor.

In a post on Dre Broussard beat a man and pleaded guilty [and was] sentenced to one year in prison,” he said. “If Dre had still been in prison [Aug. 2, 2007]2 others [Your Black Muslim Bakery] Thugs would have committed the murder.”

KQED’s Azul Dahlstrom-Eckman contributed to this report.
