The Cleveland Guardians need to change something, and quickly. In two games against the New York Yankees with a World Series berth on the line, the Guardians’ offense was ineffective, allowing just five runs in eighteen innings.

Jose Ramirez and Co. are the last bright spot in the MLB. While the Yankees, along with both NLCS contenders – the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers – were top five in payroll in 2024, the Guardians managed to field a contender in 23rd place.

The Yankees will put Clarke Schmidt on the mound, who was solid in his first postseason start, throwing 4.2 innings against the Kansas City Royals while giving up just two runs, four hits and a walk. The Guardians, meanwhile, will be shutting out Matthew Boyd, who played in both Game 2 and Game 5 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. He’s been pretty reliable so far, throwing 6.2 innings of shutout ball with just five hits and three walks while collecting ten strikeouts.
