The Queen of Villains – everything about the series

The Queen of Villains – everything about the series

She created the wrestling boom of the 80s: How Kaoru Matsumoto became one of the biggest icons of her sport

She was truly the queen of all bad girls in the ring: Nobody shaped Japanese women’s wrestling in the 80s like Kaoru “Dump” Matsumoto. As the iconic antagonist for the Crush Gals tag team, revered in the Land of the Rising Sun, they became the prototype of the so-called monster heel, the ultimate villain in pro wrestling.
The semi-biographical series inspired by her life follows a young Kaoru (Comedienne Yuriyan Retriever), who grows up in a broken family and has dreamed of becoming a wrestler since she first attended a match as a child. The five episodes trace her successful career from the first audition through the tough training with her training partners and later opponents Chigusa Nagayo (Erika Karata) and Tomoko Kitamura aka Lioness Asuka (Ayame Gôriki) to her biggest matches in the ring. And it’s not only thrillingly staged, but also extremely bloody and brutal at times.
The detailed reenactments of the historical competitions are particularly interesting for wrestling fans. But there is also a lot to discover behind the scenes of this special sports circus. The series also impresses with a lot of 80s flair and likeable protagonists. So it’s not just sports enthusiasts who get their money’s worth.
