After six years, Groves’ father demanded that she return to Indiana.

When they arrived, the boys were left by their mother at their father’s house.

Groves claimed his father was strict and abusive, and his younger brother claimed Rex suffered the worst beatings.

His younger brother also claims that Groves was sexually abused by one of their mother’s friends.

Mental health issues

Around the age of 12 or 13, Groves began hearing voices in his head.

To cope, he turned to alcohol and drugs and eventually struggled with addiction.

Death row inmates convicted of murder give first-hand accounts of their crimes in the Netflix series “I Am A Killer.”

During this time, his grandmother, Mary Gene Groves, provided him with a sense of security and comfort.

The crime

On December 10, 2007, Groves experienced paranoia while under the influence of drugs, which led him down the path of self-reflection.

Full of memories of the alleged abuse and mistreatment he had suffered, he decided to kill his father.

Instead, he went to his grandmother’s house and fatally stabbed her with garden shears.

Groves claims he doesn’t remember and can’t understand much of what transpired in this episode, but does remember seeing his dead grandparent mother lying in her bed and lying next to her for a few hours.

The next morning he went to his father’s house and found it empty.

He then went to his older brother’s house with the intention of killing his family.

But when he found only his niece and sister-in-law there, Groves confessed to them about his grandmother’s murder.

They drove him to the police station, where he made an official statement. Police recorded him laughing as he recounted the details of the brutal murder.

Attempt

While awaiting trial, Groves underwent a mental health evaluation and was initially diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

However, a second examination concluded that he did not suffer from a mental illness that would justify an insanity plea.

In November 2009, Groves pleaded guilty to murder and received a 50-year sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

His defense attorney appealed to have Groves sent to a comprehensive medical center, but his treatment continued in state prison.

Where he is now

Groves is currently 46 years old and incarcerated at the Putnamville Correctional Facility.

Groves maintains contact with his niece, but his brothers reportedly believe he is unwell.

Groves’ defense attorney has stated that his client’s medical care is necessary before any possible reintegration into society.
