Carlos Alcaraz is considered Rafael Nadal’s legitimate successor in Spain

Rafael Nadal doesn’t believe in comparisons between the new and old rivalries at the top of the world. “They are currently creating their own story,” said the 38-year-old on the sidelines of the “Six Kings Slam” show event in an interview with the Saudi Arabian organizer about his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner.

It is “not the moment to compare these rivalries” because Novak Djokovic is still active, while Roger Federer has already ended his career and Nadal himself is about to do so. “It’s a new generation now and we have to let them create their own rivalry,” said Nadal, who will end his great career in November.

“Carlos and Jannik do special things”

“They are doing great things, they are very young and are achieving fantastic things – winning Grand Slams and Masters,” continued Nadal: “Carlos and Jannik are doing special things and I wish them that they can grow even further. You will have a great career.”

Nadal also commented on his special relationship with his great rival in the early days of his career. “My relationship with Roger was special,” said the Spaniard, explaining how they were able to build a friendship despite all the competition. “It depends on how you approach the sport. There are many other important things in life besides tennis. And if you have a good relationship with your colleagues, then without a doubt you are happier,” said Nadal.

Nadal also had warm words for his second big rival, Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic. “He was a great opponent who always pushed me to the highest level,” he said about the Serb.

About a week ago, Nadal announced in a moving video that he would end his career in November. The Davis Cup finals in Malaga will be the 22-time Grand Slam winner’s last tournament. Recently, the 38-year-old had repeatedly struggled with serious injuries.
