Last year’s finalist has to cancel for Vienna

Last year’s finalist has to cancel for Vienna

Daniil Medvedev, fifth in the world rankings, has to forego competing at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna due to a shoulder injury.

The Russian has been struggling with the injury since the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai, which prevented him from starting in Vienna. The 2022 tournament winner and last year’s finalist was placed in second place, defending champion Jannik Sinner was not there, nor was sixth-placed Taylor Fritz in the world rankings.

“I have a lot of positive memories from the tournament. “It’s a shame that I can’t compete, but I’ll definitely play in Vienna again next year,” Medvedev said, announcing a return in 2025.

Alexander Zverev, who was ranked first, has started his tournament preparation in Vienna. The world number three has been training in the town hall with Dusan Lajovic and Zhizhen Zhang since Thursday. With Alex de Minaur (AUS/9th) and Grigor Dimitrov (BUL/10th) there are still three top ten players at the start.
