Samsung’s better, slimmer Galaxy Z Fold 6 will launch on October 21st

Samsung’s better, slimmer Galaxy Z Fold 6 will launch on October 21st

  • Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition will be slimmer and have larger displays than the Fold 6.

  • The device unveiling event is scheduled for October 21st. It is rumored to cost $2,200.

  • The Special Edition was intended to address some common complaints with Samsung’s foldable phones.

Several leaks and rumors have detailed Samsung’s special edition Galaxy Z Fold 6. The device will apparently be slimmer than the company’s current flagship and have larger displays. Despite rumors that the launch might be limited to South Korea and China, there is a lot of hype surrounding the foldable phone. A recent report suggested an unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition on October 24th. It turns out the report was off by a few days because Samsung had sent out invitations to an event on October 21st.

Leaker Ice Universe posted an invitation video from Samsung on X for an event on October 21st. It doesn’t specifically refer to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition, but since the company is done with all other major launches, this launch event is likely to be about its special, slimmer foldable device.

Interestingly, Samsung is not calling this event Galaxy Unpacked, which makes sense considering the device is only launching in limited markets.

Rumors suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition will address some common complaints about Samsung’s current flagship folding device, such as the noticeable crease on the display and the clunky design. Apparently the device will be about 0.6mm thinner than the Fold 6 and feature a titanium frame for added durability. The cover and internal screens are also increased to around 6.5 inches and 8 inches, respectively.

The display’s crease will reportedly be less noticeable than before, although it’s unclear what adjustments Samsung will make to achieve this. According to a recent report, Samsung could set the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition at $2,200. So all of the improvements mentioned above will come at a high cost.

Internally, Samsung’s upcoming foldable device should have the same specs as the regular Fold 6. So it will likely feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC paired with 12GB of RAM. Some rumors suggest a 200-megapixel main camera, a significant improvement over the Fold 6’s 50-megapixel camera. However, there have been no concrete leaks confirming this.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition could help Samsung compete with Chinese foldable devices

Despite being a pioneer in the foldable phone space, Samsung has fallen behind the competition in recent years. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 isn’t as impressive as the year-old OnePlus Open or Google’s second-generation Pixel 9 Pro Fold. And it’s not even worth comparing the device to foldables from Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, whose offerings outperform the Fold 6 in key areas.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition could be the first step in Samsung’s journey to regain its lost crown. Finally, the company publicly apologized to its customers and shareholders for not innovating enough.
