Zebra print is the most popular pattern in autumn 2024 – VOGUE shows how versatile the trend can be styled

Zebra Print: The black and white pattern will be worn up and down this fall.

The year is 2012. I’m an art history student standing in the local Zara store, checking out myself in a zebra-print coat. Instagram is still in its infancy, so I don’t yet have the necessary platform to communicate my decisions to the outside world – a quick question to a friend will have to do. I’m unsure because compared to the other pieces in my student wardrobe, the coat is relatively loud when I wanted to say: “Hello, I work in fashion!” In retrospect, the reality was more like: “Hello, I’m a Miranda , who dresses up as Carrie.” The coat disappeared into the closet.

Twelve years and many style personalities later, I dug out the same coat for this year’s London Fashion Week, and I noticed that it still had the power to make a statement. Apparently I wasn’t alone in my love for prints, as zebra prints in particular were omnipresent during Fashion Week. It quickly seemed as if the fashion industry wanted to leave the strong era of quiet luxury behind and return to the extrovert appeal of patterns. Zebra print has also emerged as the pattern of the moment in the street style scene, challenging the dominance of leopard print with its graphic aesthetic.

What’s striking is that no one wears the trend in the same way. Some opt for jeans and leopard-print trench coats, while others opt for more subtle hints with printed shoes, bags or belts. For Fashion Week, I styled my old Zara coat with a white tank top, black capris and metallic kitten heels – a nod to the streamlined simplicity of the late ’90s and early ’00s.
