Stan Wawrinka (ATP 217) reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm. The Vaudois, who surprisingly eliminated Brandon Nakashima in the first round in the Swedish capital, beat the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 64) 6:4, 3:6, 7:5 in the round of 16.

Wawrinka secured the first set with the best efficiency. The 39-year-old got the break to zero when the score was 3:3. In the entire first round he only won one (!) point on Fokina’s serve. Because he only allowed a little in his own service, the break was enough to win the set.

Black series ended

The first duel with the 25-year-old Spaniard remained evenly matched. After a break to make it 5:3, Fokina equalized the set. In the deciding set, Wawrinka once again proved his fighting qualities. Twice he was behind with a break, twice he got the serve back.

With the score at 6:5 and serving, Fokina Wawrinka earned a match point, which he used after more than two hours. The Romand ended a long dry spell with victory. For the first time since the US Open 2023, he strung together two victories on the ATP tour.

In the quarterfinals, Wawrinka will face either the top seed Andrej Rublew (ATP 7) from Russia or the French Alexandre Müller (ATP 70).
