The eye and lipsticks from Hermès Beauty play with colors

It’s been two years since Hermès Beauty welcomed Greek makeup artist Gregoris Pyrpylis as creative director. Beauty is the house’s 16th and youngest profession, debuting two years earlier in March 2020. (Although the company has been creating perfumes since 1951, makeup and skincare were an entirely new category for the French maison to explore).

From the start, it was abundantly clear that the beauty line would be a comprehensive celebration of craft and color; From the refillable tubes designed by Pierre Hardy to the bullets themselves, the lipsticks drew on the 75,000 shades of silk and 900 shades of leather in the house’s archives. And every other product category, from lip oils to nail polishes, has proven this in a way only Hermès could.

The latest from the “Trait d’Hermès” eye collection is perhaps the most playful offering ever: 40 eye and lipsticks (plus a liquid liner) that bring the nostalgic feeling of receiving a new set of stationery at the start of a school year. Here, Pyrpylis tells the story of her design process with Wallpaper*.

Wallpaper*: How did the concept for the “Trait d’Hermès” eye and lip liner pencils come about?

Gregoris Pyrpylis: Last year (2023) we presented the first collection for the eyes with “Le Regarde‘. In this chapter there was “Les Ombres d’Hermès”, the eyeshadows, and “Les Traits d’Hermès”, a mascara. A second part is the new eye and lip liners, which complete the expression of the eyes. Her design is in line with the Hermès ethos and references the tools we use to create.

W*: Yes, the collection is reminiscent of a new range of stationery – how did you communicate that in a way that felt right for Hermès?

Family doctor: I still remember being one of those kids who loved stationery and had a huge palette of colors in front of them. It gave me this feeling of freedom. And that’s what I wanted to communicate with the eye and lip liner pencils. Hermès sees “design” as a means of telling stories. Just as the Hermès horse is a means of transportation, a Hermès design can transport your thoughts.

I sat down with Pierre Hardy and told him my idea. Almost immediately he began drawing the designs on a piece of paper. The pencils are made from varnished, sustainable wood; He wanted to reference jumping poles to bring everything in line with the codes of the house. Then the eyeliner pen is like a fountain pen with a refillable cartridge. There is also a sharpener: it is a beautiful object in itself and from a practical point of view it has four strong magnets inside so that the pencil shavings do not fall out when traveling

W*: Can you talk about the formulations of the liners and how to use them?

Family doctor: I like makeup to be practical for everyone out there: my friends, my mom, the Hermès customer. That’s why I wanted to create a pencil that combines the function of an eyeliner pencil and a classic eyeliner. They have a very soft but not greasy texture; It’s hard enough to define the eye, but soft enough to melt upon contact with the skin. You can wear them in the waterline and the product delivers a pure color.

There is a small spot at one end to help spread the paint, but if you want to keep the line precise this is possible too. We have expanded our brush collection with a new design: “L’Estompeur de Précision”. It’s made from a combination of natural and synthetic hair, so you can blend the liner in a very controlled manner.

W*: How did you arrive at the final color palette we see in the collection?

Family doctor: We had to do extensive editing. So we came up with 24 eye pencils – the lucky number of the house – and 16 for the lips. The exercise was a bit strenuous at first for the lipliners. My goal was to have one for each of our lipsticks that didn’t affect the color of the lipstick. There are reds – blue reds and warmer yellows. For example, we have “Rouge Bleu”, one of our most famous lipsticks, and “Rouge H”. We also have rose and orange tones. But we have also introduced beautiful beige shades that you can wear alone, without combining them with lipstick, and easily define and reconstruct the lips if necessary.

For me, makeup in 2024 has become even more fun and playful than ever before. And this new chapter of Trait d’Hermès is an invitation to explore this fully.

W*: And what about the eyeliners?

Family doctor: It was important to me that there were essential classic colors for everyone – a beautiful and strong black, different shades of brown, metallic browns, bronze tones – but also to express Hermès’ unique approach to color. So at the same time we have Jaune Impérial, a kind of mustard yellow in the same shade as one of my favorite nail polishes, and Bleuet, a bright baby blue that’s almost like the sky in Greece. ‘Brun Sanguine’ is a terracotta orange that looks great when applied to green or blue eyes.

For me, makeup in 2024 has become even more fun and playful than ever before. And this new chapter of Trait d’Hermès is an invitation to explore this to the fullest.
