Check out the Jameel Prize exhibition at the V&A in London

The V&A and Art Jameel international prize exhibition for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic traditions returns to the Porter Gallery at the V&A South Kensington for the seventh year. Open from November 30, 2024 to March 16, 2025, the free exhibition in London highlights the rich artistic heritage of the Islamic Middle East and South Asia, showcasing the vibrant connection between contemporary creativity and the region’s historical heritage. The winner of the £25,000 Jameel Prize will be announced on November 27, 2024 and the work of all seven shortlisted artists will be exhibited.

“Over the past 15 years, the Prize has examined diverse responses to Islamic civilization across many media outlets. During this time, too, the range of works eligible for funding has expanded and diversified, so that in this edition we can concentrate on digital media and moving images.

Jameel Prize: Moving Images delves deeply into themes of water, ecology, landscape and spirituality through the lens of moving images and digital media. The selected artists, whose practices include film, sculpture, photography, installation, sound, performance and VR, engage with the ways in which extractive industries and political dynamics shape the ecological and social fabric of the Middle East and South Asia.

The finalists of the “Jameel Prize: Moving Images” selected from more than 300 applicants are Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, Jawa El Khash, Alia Farid, Khandakar Ohida, Zahra Malkani, Marrim Akashi Sani and Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh & Hesam Rahmanian (as a collective) .

Starting from various aspects of the Islamic tradition, the artists address the way history is written – they explore the creation and iconoclastic dismantling of monuments as well as new approaches to museums and collections. Many works use hand-drawn animations and photographs to convey personal testimonies of community, resilience and connection.

The “Jameel Prize: Moving Images” The exhibition is curated by Rachel Dedman, Jameel Curator of Contemporary Middle Eastern Art at the V&A. Following the exhibition at the V&A, it will be exhibited at the Cartwright Hall in Bradford, the UK City of Culture, in 2025 and then travel to Jeddah where it will be displayed at the state-of-the-art art complex and creative center Hayy Jameel.
