Jim Gaffigan mocks Trump with ambiguous cat joke: ‘Snatching a cat for the second time’ is a ‘campaign issue’

“Clean” comedian Jim Gaffigan excoriated Donald Trump’s “They eat the cats” debate comment with a loud meow and pointed out at the Al Smith dinner that it was the second time “grab a kitten” had become a campaign theme for the became the GOP candidate.

Gaffigan also roasted Sen. Chuck Schumer, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and others on stage at the New York City event Thursday night. He even railed against the “rich people” who attended the dinner, which benefited Catholic Charities.

The stand-up began his speech by assuring the audience that just because he plays Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live,” doesn’t mean he wouldn’t joke across the aisle: “I want you to know “I’m going to be fair and balanced tonight, and I’m going to make jokes about Donald Trump and JD Vance.”

Trump and his wife Melania Trump sat at the podium alongside Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schumer. Gaffigan roasted them all, and while Trump laughed along, Melania seemed unaffected by the comedian’s jokes about her husband.

“During the first and only debate, President Trump talked about migrants taking and eating cats,” Gaffigan said. “You know, if you’re keeping track at home, this is the second time cat-snatching has been part of a campaign issue.”

The former first lady wore a stoic expression as the crowd erupted in laughter, including a slight smile from her husband.

The dinner is named after former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith, who in 1928 became the first Catholic to be nominated for president by a major U.S. political party. Vice President Kamala Harris was not present, but she did not escape Gaffigan’s grasp.

“This event was called the Catholic Met Gala. 22% of Americans identify as Catholic. “Catholics will be an important demographic in every battleground state, and I’m sorry, why is Vice President Harris not here?” he said. “This is a room full of Catholics and Jews in New York City. This is a basket case for the Democratic candidate.”

Gaffigan also joked to the audience that we are only 19 days away from Election Day and it’s “probably a civil war.”

“I’m nervous, you know what I mean, this is my first civil war guys. I don’t own a musket,” he added.

The other politicians and journalists present were also not spared from making fun of her. Gaffigan received the strongest reaction from the crowd with a swipe at New York Mayor Adams.

“Ten million dollars is pretty impressive. “I mean, granted, you can get a studio apartment in Manhattan with it, which seems expensive, especially considering you can get a mayor for two business class flights,” Gaffigan joked. “I would also like to welcome Mayor Adams, brought to you by Turkish Airlines.”
