These players are involved in the national team’s comeback

The American Football Association of Germany (AFVD) has had a few turbulent years. Legal disputes with the former president are still ongoing today. Some of the effects are visible to everyone. The final of the German Football League is now called the “GFL Bowl” and no longer the traditional “German Bowl” because the naming rights belong to the ex-president or his company.

But with the election of the new board around the new president Fuad Merdanovic in November 2022, the AFVD has moved in the right direction. One thing that has been reawakened is the German national team. In February 2023, Shuan Fatah (bald head coach of the Hamburg Sea Devils in the European League of Football) was elected head coach, and there have been several courses since then. And now we’re finally playing again.

Decisive game in Krefeld

This Saturday (5 p.m.) Germany will take on Great Britain in Birmingham. A later week (October 26th, 5 p.m.) Sweden will be guests in Krefeld at the Grotenburg Stadium. The two teams will play a participant in a group of three for the final round of the 2025 European Championships. The group winner qualified for the “Final Four”. There is a live stream from the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) for all parties.

The party between Germany and Sweden in Krefeld will definitely bring about the decision in the group. Because the Swedes already won against Great Britain last week (20:19) and are now free to play. If Germany wins in Birmingham, Great Britain would already be out and the AFVD selection will play directly against Sweden to advance. If we lost on Saturday it would still be the same, but with more calculations.

Germany can certainly expect to have a chance of moving forward. Because Shuan Fatah’s selection is made up of ELF players who have been at home at the highest European level for several years. Including, of course, a few players from the two-time title holder Rhein Fire.

Six players from Rhine Fire nominated

At least six have been nominated for the 45-man squad. There are three representatives from the Rhinelanders on the offensive line: Sven Breidenbach, Nick Wiens and David Weinstock. Marius Kensy and Lennart Weitz (both linebackers) as well as defensive back Rene Hanssen are also nominated.

“The national team has a great history and it is up to us to carry on this legacy,” Kensy is quoted as saying by the AFVD. “We have a lot of talented players in the squad and I am confident we will perform strongly.”

The German national team has been European champion three times (2001, 2010 and 2014). After a ten-year break, she was aiming for her fourth title. It’s a great honor, says Sven Breidenbach: “The chemistry in the team is fantastic and we know that we can achieve great things together.”
