Cycling: Track Cycling World Championships: World record show and World Cup record

The third day of the Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen came to an end with a world record show in the single pursuit and the World Cup record from super sprinter Harrie Lavreysen. In the 4000 meter individual pursuit, the record was improved twice within a few hours. First, the young Briton Josh Charlton raced to the world record in the qualification in 3:59.304 minutes, which was then topped in the final by the victorious Italian Jonathan Milan in 3:59.153 minutes. The old record set by Italian superstar Filippo Ganna (3:59.636) had previously stood for two years.

Lavreysen’s performance in the 1000 meter time trial was also historic. The Dutchman won his 15th world title in 57.321 seconds, making him the sole record winner.

Kluge finished eighth in the points race

The German team, on the other hand, came away empty-handed. Roger Kluge from Ludwigsfelde had a mixed day in the points race and finished eighth with 35 points. “I didn’t have the best leg. That’s why I was hoping to catch the right group. That didn’t work either, so I lagged behind quite a bit. “That was suboptimal,” summed up Kluge, who won silver in this discipline at the 2008 Olympic Games. The Spaniard Sebastian Mora Vedri became world champion (70 points).

The young German pursuer Bruno Kessler from Leipzig (14th place/4:14.021) and Ben Felix Jochum from Wuppertal (15th/4:14.982) clearly missed the finals in the 4000 meter individual pursuit after taking bronze the day before in the team pursuit and were only supporting actors in the world record show.

In the 1000 meter time trial, the German champion Henric Hackmann from Kaiserslautern (12th place/1:01.055) and Pete-Collin Flemming from Cottbus (16th/1:01.932) also finished after qualifying. In the women’s sprint, Alessa-Catriona Pröpster and World Cup newcomer Clara Schneider failed in the round of 16. Olympic silver medalist Lea Sophie Friedrich, like former world champion Emma Hinze (near Cottbus), had forgone the World Cup.
