Tennis talent Schwärzler tested a Spanish coach in Vienna

Tennis talent Schwärzler tested a Spanish coach in Vienna

One day after his wildcard, Joel Schwärzler received a hammer ticket for his Stadthalle debut in the draw for the Erste Bank Open in Vienna: He meets number 1, third in the world rankings Alexander Zverev.

“I’m looking forward to the match. I will go in to win, even if the chances are not that good now,” says the 18-year-old from Vorarlberg.

Schwärzler is considered Austria’s great young hope. “I feel good. Of course the last few weeks haven’t been as desired, but nonetheless I’ve trained well. I’m playing well in training and hopefully I’ll be able to reach a good level.”

This week Schwärzler tested the Spanish coach Juan Ozon-Llacer, who had previously worked successfully with the Chilean Nicolas Jarry. “We get along very well and have a very similar goal. We’re heading towards a decision, it won’t take long.”

Separation from Melzer was “the right decision”

On the one hand, he will freely move further and further forward in the ranking. “The most important thing is simply development, physically, playfully and mentally. If all this improves, the results will come naturally.”

The decision to part ways with ÖTV sports director Jürgen Melzer after three years of working with him did not come overnight. “At the stage I’m in now, I think it was the right decision. I’m looking forward to the new chapter.”

Schwärzler does not rule out collaboration with Bresnik

In Austria, Schwärzler also repeatedly trained with Günter Bresnik. When asked by the APA whether the ex-Thiem coach would also be a variant, Schwärzler did not rule it out.

“I live four minutes from there, he has the perfect players for me and he can teach me a lot,” said Schwärzler, referring to the proximity to the southern part of the city. “I am super grateful for him for helping me through the difficult phase. Let’s see what happens next.”

Now the focus is on working with Ozon-Llacer, but Schwärzler added: “I won’t say that Günter isn’t an option, but I won’t say that I’ll go to Günter either.” Bresnik is one of the best coaches world and “we already know each other well”.
