The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year and is held in August and September in New York. The first tennis tournament for men took place in 1881, followed six years later by a women’s competition. The first tournaments were held in Newport until they moved to New York in 1915. The tournament was held on grass until 1974, then on sand for three years. Since 1978, it has been played on hard courts. The most successful German at the US Open is Steffi Graf with five wins and eight final appearances.
