Nationwide campaign: “Kinofest” launched – watch films for five euros

This weekend, hundreds of cinemas in Germany want to offer discounted film screenings for five euros. The so-called cinema festival is entering its third round this year. More than 600 cinemas are taking part in the campaign on September 7th and 8th, around 30 of them in Berlin.

“With the cinema festival, we want to reach not only all age groups, but especially those who have not been to the cinema for a long time,” said Christine Berg, head of the Association of German Film Theaters (HDF Kino).

Classics and new films

Cinema operators want to prepare a special program – some are showing classics on the big screen, for example. Others are serving champagne and organizing activities for children. Some films are also scheduled to be shown before their official cinema release – for example “Treasure” by Julia von Heinz with Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry.

Last year, the film festival attracted around 932,000 visitors to its cinemas – the first edition in 2022 attracted around 1.1 million visitors.

By the end of August, around 53.5 million tickets had been sold at German box offices, HDF Kino said, citing an industry analysis service. In 2023, the figure was around 62.2 million in the same period. This was mainly due to the consequences of the Hollywood strike last year, which is why the release of some major films had been postponed, said Berg, to the detriment of tickets.
