Colors, fabrics, lengths: What will Munich residents wear at the Oktoberfest 2024? A traditional costume expert explains what is fashionable this year and what the no-gos are.

Munich – Even if some people claim that a real Munich resident doesn’t wear traditional costume to the Oktoberfest, it can hardly be denied that for the majority of visitors, dirndls and lederhosen are now a must. Max Feichtmeyer, Head of Purchasing and Sales at Wirkes, knows what is fashionable this year and what the no-gos are.

“For women, the trend is clearly towards longer dirndls, i.e. 70s or 80s length,” says the expert. The skirt must definitely go over the knee, however. “In terms of materials, linen or corduroy are becoming more popular.” But velvet is also here to stay.” According to Feichtmeyer, cap sleeves on blouses are very popular.

The colors are from the autumn palette: Bordeaux, muted orange, olive green, petrol or dark blue. Or: “Black is in high demand in Munich. Whether tone-on-tone or combined with gray – with the right materials it looks very classy on both women and men.”

The centerpiece for men is of course the leather trousers, in which, according to the expert, you should invest a little more. “Beige and brown always work, of course.” But if you want to buy a third pair that looks a little different, you should now go for shades of gray and muted embroidery.” The right length: short! And the expert’s appeal: “Please no checked shirts! Plain white or small patterns.” And a vest is a good idea.

Also important: “Don’t forget what to wear over the top. “A matching cardigan always looks better than a denim jacket – and is better than freezing,” emphasises Feichtmeyer.

When it comes to footwear, pumps, ankle boots and Haferl shoes are always a good choice. But the expert also says: “You can’t escape fashion.” If they are clean, white sneakers are also fine for young people.”
