The dream of the first Grand Slam title remains unfulfilled for Alexander Zverev – once again. The German is stunned by his performance.

Update from September 4th: A helpless Alexander Zverev was harsh on himself after his elimination in the quarterfinals of the US Open. “It was just bottomless, I didn’t do anything to deserve the win, it’s as simple as that,” he said, more annoyed than frustrated after his defeat in four sets against the American Taylor Fritz.

Zverev at a loss for words after defeat against Fritz

His dream of his first Grand Slam title remains unfulfilled. But Zverev did not look for excuses after the seemingly close 6:7 (2:7), 6:3, 4:6, 6:7 (3:7) against the risk-taking 12th ranked player in the world. “I played terribly,” he said several times, “the serve was OK, but I felt absolutely terrible from the baseline.”

The 27-year-old from Hamburg had a particularly bad time with his backhand. “Terrible, absolutely terrible. My most reliable shot, which I normally play at three in the morning without any problems… I’m lost for words,” he said, adding: “It was unbelievable, I don’t know if I’ve ever had such a feeling in my backhand in my career.” I think it’s the first time, and I hope it’s the last time.”

Zverev struggles with his own performance

He already felt in the second rally that things were not going well, said Zverev, who, curiously enough, will be number two in the world rankings again from Monday. “There was a point when I didn’t know what to do anymore – I have no answers. I won’t have an answer to any of the questions.” Despite changing rackets several times, he had no feeling for his shots.

In many rallies, Zverev played passively in his first appearance in the huge Arthur Ashe Stadium, and was unable to make decisive use of small periods of weakness in his tactically clever opponent. Even winning the second set did not change his game. “My tennis did not get any better, I somehow won the second set, but nothing got better,” he said.

Zverev even seemed resigned, especially in the fourth set. Boris Becker, an expert on sportdeutschland.tv, repeatedly stated that the German number one did not exude enough conviction, “the expression is missing,” he complained. “I was not exhausted,” Zverev assured, but out of sheer uncertainty he “eventually played so defensively that I had to run ten times more than him.”

Zverev against Fritz: German wants revenge for Wimbledon

During training in the New York midday sun, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz were able to get to know each other a little. Only about 15 meters apart, the German tennis star and his quarter-final opponent at the US Open hit a few loose balls on Monday and got the final touches for the eagerly awaited duel on Tuesday – in which Zverev is looking for revenge.

“I expect it to be another very, very tough match, a great battle – hopefully with a different result than in Wimbledon,” said Zverev before the duel with the 12th-ranked player from the USA. Around two months ago, Fritz had turned a 0-2 set deficit against the ailing Hamburg player in the round of 16 on the sacred grass of Wimbledon. But the signs have changed. “Now I’m healthy, that’s the big difference,” emphasized Zverev, who sensed his big chance in the hunt for his longed-for first Grand Slam title.

After the elimination of Olympic champion Novak Djokovic and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, the field of top favorites has been greatly reduced, and he will only meet his main rivals Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev in the final. The time seems to be right. But Zverev does not want to look that far yet: “I have Taylor Fritz next. That is the only thing that interests me.” (sid/kk)
